Predefinito UK: nuovo record in una scuola - Gli studenti parlano 71 lingue diverse

Class talk: Pupils at Southfields Community College speak 71 different languages

UK school sets new record for most languages spoken in class

Southfields Community College in Wandsworth has become Europe's most cosmopolitan school. The college takes pupils, who have fled war zones, cannot speak English and have not been to school before, now 71 different languages are spoken in its classrooms.

White Hart Lane comprehensive school in Tottenham was previously thought to have been Europe's most cosmopolitan school, with pupils from 50 countries speaking 58 languages.

Of the college's 1,300 pupils, 550 are bilingual and about 400 come from the Caribbean.

Headteacher Jacqueline Valin said: "The assumption that children are not bright because they can't speak English is rubbish. Education is so important to students that come from abroad. They see it as the way out of poverty, a way of getting ahead and raising their self esteem."

Anita Sollis, head of the school's ethnic minority achievement team, said: "These children have a burning desire and belief that education is the way forward. People say they hold other kids back but their attitude is so good they are role models."

The school's results are improving. The proportion of pupils getting five Cs or better at GCSE rose from 27 per cent in 2002 to 38 per cent last year.

The pupils reflect the world's troubles. "The children come from very traumatic and stressful backgrounds," said Ms Valin.

"I taught one Somalian girl and she had a scar on her hand. She said she got it from being shot." She added: "We have had a sustained increase in the number of pupils from abroad but there has never been a problem with the racial mix."

All very charitable to be Europes most "cosmopolitan" school, mean while UK schooling is a complete shambles...whatever happened to charity starts at home!

    Do they speak English?
    - Loris, Milan

These school children should be taught in English only, speak in English during the school day because dare I say it, the school is in ENGLAND.

You can try and put a positive spin, calling it "Europe's most cosmopolitan school". Let's face it, going there would be an absolute nightmare.

How does a British teacher teach so many immigrant children? Talk about holes in a fishing net.
    - Glenis, Bury, UK

This is ok providing they can all speak fluent English.
    - Martin, Blackburn Lancs

Well said Lydia. Too much money is wasted on finding teachers that can speak other languages. A school in England should teach in English, no ifs no buts.

I'd love my kids to attend a school like that! It'd be great to be exposed to different cultures from an early age. As long the common language is English, I see nothing wrong with it. Well done on the teachers!

And they wonder why our children cannot read and write English when they leave school.
    - Valerie, Gateshead

Where in the above article does it state that lessons are not conducted in English? Where do you think all these multilingual teachers are coming from? My mother worked at a London school where over 50 languages were spoken and all lessons were conducted in English as per the national curriculum. One boy arrived in year 9 from Sri Lanka speaking no English and ended up winning a uni place at Cambridge.
    - Ruth, London, UK

Well at least the children want to learn - more so than many of the native English children...
    - Mr S Mall, East Riding of Yorkshire

Nothing to be proud of our kids are suffering because the teachers can't devote their time with them.

God for forbid any of us should have to escape war torn countries, genecide and such like. Some people dont know when they are lucky. The schools are trying their best to educate marginalised children who like our children have a human right to education. Applaud it not condemn it!

Pity the poor girl who got shot in the hand. Anyway, its good experience for the life she will face here.
    - Brian, London

This is great news. Its a shame none of you can see that
